“At The Academy, emerging artists engage in a world-class education. Our kids invest—deeply—in the process of mastering the fundamentals of their craft so they can expand the possibilities of their art. In doing so, these artists develop a capacity for imagination that is broad, and deep, and powerful, and their art compels the audience to do the same. We—all of us—benefit greatly from the results: their choreography, their drawings, their songs, their images, their words.””

For Your Consideration
In recognition of the beginning of Black History Month, I’m taking some time today to reflect on one of my musical heroes.
For nearly 20 years before I became The Academy’s Head of School, I maintained a grueling roster of private piano students at my studio in the suburbs. Over the years, I had hundreds of students, and many developed into virtuoso musicians, won major scholarships and awards, and became successful professionals.I am not a virtuoso musician. My students excelled because I was able to help them develop momentum.
